Rumble Coffee

Located within a neat pocket of Kensington, this humble espresso bar showcases robust materiality juxtaposed with sinuous surfaces and shapes. Rumble Coffee provides a warm, inviting locus that affords the neighbourhood the opportunity to indulge in what really matters; beautifully crafted coffee.

With our perpetual commitment to both high quality and sustainable design, the vision for Rumble Coffee was to blend concrete blockwork, stainless steel and warm timber tones. The Brutalist origins of the venue cast a striking silhouette, one that has been meticulously designed with intentional layers of textures and finishes.

“The space is conceived as a dialogue between roughness and refinement, creating an experience grounded in both meaning and function.”
-Jamie Kim

Polished concrete floors mirror the ceiling’s soft curvature, grounding the space while amplifying its light. Stainless steel runs the length of the benchspace like a continuous horizon; precise, reflective, and functional, offset by warm timber panels to soften the industrial edge. The shelving has been selected to float lightly, and has been strategically placed to create a sense of permeability whilst maintaining privacy.

Light traces the ceiling in a thin glowing line as an illuminated gesture. This rope light was procured in order to provide an identity for Rumble Coffee, part sketch, part signature, the looping pendant is a subtle statement piece that fits seamlessly within the café.

An integral part of getting your morning coffee is not just the product, it’s also the experience. The spatial arrangement has been curated in such a way that provides a stage for the craft, barristers on show for all to enjoy, whilst maintaining an appropriate sense of separation of spaces. Tasked with creating a space of tranquil where remnants of Brutalist Architecture exists, the Stainless Steel assists in bridging the gap between abrupt concrete and smoother timber textures. The layout of the fixtures are optimised for pure functionality, whilst providing different points of observation for the everyday customer. Sleek and lustrous design is achieved with slight nods to organic curves that frame the overall aesthetic.
