Through a sensitivity to heritage and an adaption of traditional crafts, Merah is a modern dining experience with a strong dose of nostalgia.
The design pays homage to the rich cuisine and recipes of the founder’s grandmother from which the flavours and products of the restaurant are based. We created a breakdown of the ingredients in traditional Sambal chilli; the deep red chilli, green pandan leaves, and the speckled nature of the production process and translated it across the restaurant interior.
We incorporated arches inspired by the traditional Asian shophouse. The result is an expressive and nostalgic space that is modern, yet rooted in tradition, reflective of the overall dining experience.
